Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes when you hit “Send”? Here's a peek under the hood of how your message gets from your keyboard to your customer's mobile phone—quickly, securely, and reliably.
Once you send your messages using Mobile Message—whether from our web platform or API—they are immediately encoded using the GSM 03.38 character set, the industry standard for SMS. This 7-bit encoding fits up to 160 characters per message. If your messages exceed that length, they are automatically broken into segments, each with a special User Data Header (UDH) that enables the recipient's phone to reassemble the messages as one complete text.
Each message or segment is then wrapped in a binary packet called a PDU, a format defined by the SMPP protocol. This PDU includes everything from the destination number and sender ID to encoding format and delivery receipt flags. They are sent over a dedicated SMPP v3.4 connection that runs through a VPN-secured tunnel to our Australian carrier partners. This private and encrypted channel ensures both speed and security at every step.
Once received by the carrier's Short Message Service Centre (SMSC), your messages undergo a Home Location Register (HLR) lookup to determine the recipient's network and current routing path. From there, they are passed through the Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) and transmitted over the carrier's signalling network to each recipient's mobile device. When the handset receives the message, it sends back an acknowledgment. This triggers a delivery receipt (DLR) that's relayed back through the entire chain—SMSC, carrier, and VPN-secured SMPP connection—right into your Mobile Message dashboard or webhook.
All of this typically happens in just a few seconds. With direct Australian delivery, secure infrastructure, and real-time delivery receipts on every message, Mobile Message gives you bulk SMS that's not just fast—but engineered for precision.
